BioEdward Elric was taken from his home world immediately after killing the homunculus of his mother, known as Sloth. Refusing to believe in the concept of gods of any variety, Ed chose to simply ignore Medea and Asclepius - and they did little to influence his life. For months he chose to remain on the Lower Level, rationalizing that it wasn't much different from the month spent on Yock Island, training with Al as kids.
Shortly before the Apocalypse that took the lives of the gods, Edward had finally put a request in for access to the Upper Level of Purgatorium - deciding that he'd feel much more comfortable if able to use his alchemy. Chaos broke out, the gods were killed and shortly after Ed returned to his own world.
That's the last Ed remembers of Purgatorium. He was returned to the point from which he came in his own timeline, finished what he had set out to do and restored his brother to the younger's original body. After two years trapped in another world, Edward returned to his own world long enough for Al to tag along after him on his trip back to Germany.
The brothers set out to put an end to the war that had already begun in this world across the Gate, when Ed once again found himself in yet another world.
The name hadn't changed, and the place wasn't entirely different - but it was still barely recognizable as the Purgatorium that Edward had known before. Ed remembered being there before, remembered the battle that had caused so much havoc - and had a vague recollection of names and faces of the friends he'd had there, but nothing more.
